What the F.O.D. covers are for

The abbreviation F.O.D. stands for foreign object damage. At an airfield the risk is that a stone, a bolt or a piece of tooling gets into the intake, and machines standing on the ground are therefore fitted with covers over the air intakes. They tend to be made in conspicuous colors, so that nobody overlooks them before takeoff.

Building and painting tips

The parts are not polystyrene and solvent cement for plastic will not join them; use cyanoacrylate glue. Cut the surplus material away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the remainder back, so that the mating surface sits. Before painting, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry, otherwise the paint holds badly. Deep red and orange do not cover evenly on a bare surface, so lay an undercoat beneath them.
