About product

Scat II and Scat III, two machines of one pilot

Robin Olds is among the pilots whose name modelers know even without a detailed explanation. In the Second World War he flew a twin-boom Lightning with the 434th Fighter Squadron, which came under the 479th Fighter Group, and in May 1944 he had two machines in turn. The first was the P-38J-15-LO with the serial number 43-28707, the second 43-28341, and both carried the same code L2 with the individual letter W on the nacelles.

Numbered names

The inscriptions on the two aircraft differed only in the ordinal number, Scat II and Scat III. The pilot carried the name over from aircraft to aircraft and raised the ordinal numeral. The modeler thus gets the rare chance to build side by side two consecutive chapters in the career of one man on otherwise almost identical machines.

Wicked Woman

The third subject is the P-38J-15-LO with the serial number 42-23587 and the inscription Wicked Woman, which flew with the 8th Fighter Squadron. The pilot was Lieutenant McLawson. It is the same production block as the previous two machines, so the shape of the airframe is identical and only the color and inscription treatment differs.

What a twin-boom airframe is good for

Among American fighters the Lightning was an exception: two engines, two tail booms and the cockpit in the middle. The arrangement gave the pilot concentrated fire from the nose without the need to converge the guns at a single point, and at the same time a decent range. Models of this type in 1:32 scale need a lot of room in a display case because of the span.

The form the sheet comes in

The markings are supplied on a carrier sheet for wet transfer. The kit and the paints are not part of it.

FAQ

Because they belonged to one pilot one after the other. The code was tied to a place in the unit, not to the airframe, so after the aircraft was changed it moved onto the new machine with the pilot.

Yes, the supplier gives the production block P-38J-15-LO for all of them. The differences are therefore in the inscriptions and the finish, not in the shape of the airframe.

The markings are prepared for three different aircraft, so with three kits the whole trio can be built. One set is used on one model.

No. The package contains only a printed sheet of markings in 1:32 scale.
