A set of instrument details of the pilot's cockpit for a large Mustang model in 1:32 scale. The motif is printed in color on decal paper and given a relief 3D texture. It is therefore not a resin or photo-etched part — the set is soaked off in water and laid onto an already built and painted cockpit, exactly like an ordinary wet decal. The sheet is prepared for the parts of the Revell kit.

The real subject

The P-51D is the best known production version of the Mustang, recognizable above all by the bubble canopy that replaced the earlier framed glazing. The 5-NA block designation refers to an early production batch of the D version from the Californian plant; it was precisely with the first D blocks that directional stability had to be addressed, which later led to a modification of the vertical tail. For the modeler that bubble canopy is the decisive point: it offers a practically unobstructed view into the cockpit from every side, so the difference between bare plastic and a drawn-out interior shows more on a Mustang than on aircraft with framed glazing.

How the set is applied

• Paint and assemble the cockpit and coat it with a gloss clear coat — a matte base leads to silvering.
• Cut the motif out with a sharp scalpel close to the edge of the print.
• Soak it briefly in lukewarm water and lay it on while the motif can still be slid.
• Press the water out with a soft cloth, from the center toward the edges.
• Dose the decal softener by drops; an aggressive product flattens the relief.
• Once dry, go over it with a matte varnish and fit the canopy only at the very end.

Who the set is for

For modelers building a large Mustang, where the cockpit under the bubble canopy is fully on show, and for those who want fine instrument detail without bending photo-etched parts. The level of difficulty is that of ordinary work with decals.
