Masking set for the North American P-51D Mustang fighter in 1:32 scale. It contains films for the teardrop canopy from both faces, three sets of national insignia masks and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The P-51D version is the form of the Mustang most people picture: a cut-down fuselage decking and a one-piece teardrop cockpit cover in place of the earlier framed greenhouse. The pilot could thereby see to the rear practically without restriction, and it is precisely this change that makes a model in a large scale a demanding piece. The clear cover has almost no framing, so every drop of paint on the glass shows and every overrun on the curve of the windscreen spoils the whole impression.
The center of gravity of the masks lies at the three-part windscreen with its flat armored plate and at the rim by which the cover seats on the fuselage. Die-cut film holds a crisp edge even on curved glass, where tape would inevitably form folds. The inner set allows the frame to be colored from the inner view as well, which on such a transparent cockpit is noticed at once.
A star sprayed through a mask sits in the paint with no glossy edge, so once matted down there is no telling where the insignia begins. On the sizeable area of the wing in 1:32 scale that shows more than on small models. Before pulling the film off, let the paint flash off and pull it over its own edge so that it does not lift the finish.
