Eduard 1:32 P-51D Exhausts - Resin Set

This item is a resin replacement for the exhaust stacks of a model of the P-51D Mustang fighter in 1:32 scale, not an airplane kit. The cast parts take the place of the plastic exhausts from the kit and offer above all what injection-molded plastic cannot: genuinely hollowed openings and sharp edges, which on a plastic part come about only after laborious drilling. The set is made by the Czech company Eduard.

The real subject

The P-51D was the most widespread version of the American Mustang fighter, a single-engine all-metal machine with a bubble canopy, a laminar flow wing and long range. The row of exhaust stacks on both sides of the forward fuselage is one of the most conspicuous details of this type, because it lies at the viewer's eye level and is usually heavily stained by exhaust gases. On a large model in 1:32 scale it is exactly there that the standard of the whole build shows.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with detergent to remove traces of the mold release agent, otherwise paint will not hold on them. Cut off the casting blocks with a fine saw or a cutting disc and sand the surface flat; when sanding resin, protect your airways and work wet, because the dust is unhealthy. Try the opening in the fuselage that the exhausts fit into dry first and adjust it with a file if needed. Use super glue for bonding; cement meant for plastic does not work on resin. Painting: a base in a dark metallic shade, then a dry brush with rusty and brown tones and finally streaks of exhaust drawn to the rear.
