About product

The Thunderbolts of the 395th Squadron

Among American fighters the Republic P-47 was the heaviest and most robust machine, and that is exactly why units attacking ground targets liked it. Eight machine guns, a mighty radial engine and the ability to get home even with serious damage made it the ideal tool for low-level attacks over France and Germany. Both subjects on this sheet belonged to such a unit.

Sleepy Jean 3rd

The first machine is the P-47D-28-RA with the serial number 42-28641, which carried the squadron marking A7 and the individual letter W on the fuselage. It was flown by Lieutenant William J. Wayland, and the name Sleepy Jean 3rd with the ordinal three suggests that this was already the third aircraft of the same name the pilot had been given.

Slick Chick

The second subject is a later production block, the P-47D-30-RA with the serial number 44-33221, again with the marking A7, this time with the letter B. Its pilot was Lieutenant Colonel Frank Perego and the machine carried the name Slick Chick. A shift in production can be seen between the two aircraft: the block numbers separate the earlier and the later construction of the same version.

What the group did during the war

From the fall of 1944 the 368th Fighter Group devoted itself mainly to the direct support of advancing ground units. It destroyed bridges, columns, railway junctions and artillery positions, work that meant flying low and within reach of antiaircraft weapons. The wear on the equipment and the rapid turnover of individual machines matched that, and it shows on both subjects in their differing production blocks.

The form of the delivery

The artwork is printed on a carrier sheet that releases after soaking. The Thunderbolt model in 1:32 scale, the paints and the clear coat do not belong to the delivery.

FAQ

It is the squadron code. The letter after the hyphen then denotes the particular aircraft within the unit, so A7-W and A7-B are two different machines of one squadron.

They belong to two production blocks of the same version, so the differences are in details rather than in the overall shape. Even so, check for the build which version your kit represents.

An ordinal numeral was used with nose inscriptions when a pilot was given another machine and wanted to keep the name. The three therefore refers to the third aircraft of the same name.

They are not. The package contains only the printed sheet with the markings.
