This photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard is an accessory to a kit, not a model of the vehicle. Photo-etched parts in thin metal replace items that cannot be molded in plastic at a realistic thickness: grilles and screens over the cooling openings, grab handles, hinges, tool mounts, sheet-metal covers and small formed details. The result shows chiefly on the upper surface of the hull and on the turret, that is where the eye goes first when the model is displayed. The set is intended for 1:35 scale, and its particular make-up and the number of parts are given in the instructions for the set.
The M18 was an American tank destroyer of the Second World War period, built around an emphasis on speed and mobility. It had a light welded hull, an open rotating turret with a 76 mm gun and torsion bar suspension with a relatively high power-to-weight ratio, thanks to which it was among the fastest tracked vehicles of its day. That mobility was paid for with thin armor and an open turret roof. In design terms it is a vehicle with a large share of visible detail on the surface, which is exactly the situation where a photo-etched set shows its worth.
Cut the parts off on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel or photo-etch shears; never snap them off. Make the bends over a straight edge, ideally in a bending tool; larger areas are best annealed briefly before forming, so that the metal softens and does not spring back. Degrease the metal first and lay down a primer suited to metal, otherwise the paint will flake off in time. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue in small drops applied on the tip of a wire. On the running gear and the inner areas, finish the assembly and painting before the space is closed up. Then tune the weathering with washes into the recesses and with pigments for dust and mud effects.
This is an accessory set, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
