A full photo-etched set aimed at the landing gear and the landing gear bays of a model of the Panavia Tornado IDS combat aircraft in 1:32 scale. This is not a kit of the aircraft but a detail accessory with which you complete and replace the plastic parts of the base model. The set belongs to the full photo-etched line, that is to the more extensive variant, rather than to the smaller pre-painted Zoom line, which deals with the cockpit only.
The landing gear bays and the gear legs are just as conspicuous in large scales as the cockpit, because a model tends to be displayed on a base and the viewer looks at it from below as well. Real bays are full of runs, brackets, sheet metal stiffeners and thin covers that injection-molded plastic can only suggest in a simplified way. Photo-etched parts have the right thickness and crisp detail, so the space gains depth at once. It shows markedly on the inner faces of the gear doors too, which are clearly visible on a finished model.
The Panavia Tornado IDS is a two-seat combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing, powered by a pair of turbofan engines with afterburners. The IDS version is intended for strikes against ground targets and for penetration at low level. The nose gear has twin wheels and the main gear retracts into the fuselage, which makes for fairly intricate bays with a rich internal fit.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades, and bend long strips along their whole length at once. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue or with a thicker varnish, which gives more time to line a part up. First cut away the plastic in the places where the photo-etching goes and level the area. Degrease the photo-etched parts before painting and spray them with a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on metal. The bays come alive nicely with a light base, a dark wash and a fine dry brush along the edges.
The set is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
