Stencils for the most widespread combat version of the Spitfire in 1:32 scale. It masks the clear parts from the outer and the inner face, two masks serve for the roundels and decals are added.

When the Fw 190 appeared over the Channel, the British fighter squadrons lost their advantage at altitude overnight. The solution was to put a two-stage supercharged Merlin of the 60 series into the airframe of the Mk V. What arose was a machine with a longer nose, four exhaust stacks on the side and a second radiator under the wing. Over six thousand were built and they fought from Malta to Burma.
It is precisely its spread that is the pitfall with this version. The Mk IX came in many forms: early examples with a flat windscreen and internal armored glass, later ones with laminated glass bonded into the frame, and with them three different shapes of sliding section. A cut stencil is aimed at the shape of a particular kit, so transferring it to a model of different origin may not work out. Before you reach for a knife and start shortening things, compare the outlines dry.
On early machines the protective plate sits inside the cockpit, so the frame is visible from both sides. Masking the inner face is no luxury here: without it you would have to brush the interior shade into a narrow groove, and that is two hours of work with an uncertain outcome. With inner pieces it is done in a few minutes.
Fit the sliding section only after the camouflage has been sprayed, so that you have free access to the frames from every side. Take the stencils off while the finish is fresh; once it has cured completely the edge of the paint peels away together with the film, and such a repair costs more time than the whole masking job.
