Masks for the glazing and national insignia of the Spitfire Mk XVI, 1:32 scale. A double set of canopy pieces, two insignia masks and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Spitfire did not get the Mk XVI designation because of a change to the airframe but because of the origin of its powerplant. It was the same machine as the Mk IX, only with a Merlin built under license in the USA by Packard. The difference is inside the cowling and from outside it shows only in small details, which makes the Mk XVI a typical candidate for confusion both when building and when buying accessories.
Most of the Mk XVIs built belonged to the late production wave, and that has features the early Mk IX does not. The fuselage has a cut-down dorsal area behind the cockpit and a one-piece domed bubble without dividing frames at the sides sits above the pilot. The wing is usually clipped with a straight end instead of an elliptical tip, because the machines flew mainly low down. The armament settled on a pair of 20 mm cannon and pairs of heavy machine guns. For masking it is precisely the glazing that matters: the bubble has far fewer frames than the older canopy and the mask therefore looks different from machines with the raised decking. If the model is being built as an early Mk XVI with the old cockpit, the pieces have to be checked one by one.
Masks for both faces of the glazing, a pair of roundel pieces and decals belong to the set. The inner layer is doubly useful here, because a bubble slid back exposes the cockpit deep inside and an untreated frame would show through it. A domed surface also pushes the edge of a flat piece upwards, so it pays to press the perimeter down firmly and to spray rather thinner and more often. Plastic parts and paints are not included; the set follows on from a built model.
