Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I (early version) 1:32 from the New Zealand manufacturer Kotare, a modern injection-molded kit that is among the most accurate Spitfires in shape ever made.

Injection-molded plastic kit in 1:32 scale from the New Zealand manufacturer Kotare. In a short time the brand has earned a reputation few others have: its Spitfires are regarded in the modeling community as some of the most accurate kits ever made, with a modern mold, perfect fit and a fine surface combining engraved panel lines, engraved rivets and raised riveting where the real aircraft had them. At the same time the kit is deliberately cleverly broken down, so there are no unnecessary parts and the build goes briskly. The box holds gray and clear plastic, decals with three marking schemes and an extensive illustrated instruction sheet. A point for purists: there are no rivets on the leading sections of the wing and on the nose, because on early Spitfires the riveting there was filled and sanded flush for speed.
The Spitfire Mk.I is the Spitfire of the Battle of Britain, the first production Spitfire fighter, with which the RAF defended the British sky in 1940. The early version differs from later machines in a number of details, and it is precisely those that make up an extra sprue of parts: the two-blade wooden Watts propeller (instead of the later metal variable-pitch unit), an unarmored fuel tank, early exhausts, a narrow aerial mast, ring and bead sights, a two-tube pitot, a different instrument panel and the early cockpit door without a crowbar. Kotare also leaves the sprues for the later mid production version in the box, so it is a versatile stock of parts at the same time.
Many Czechoslovak pilots served with the RAF and the Spitfire is inseparably linked with them. Mind one possible mix-up: the Spitfire Mk.Vb, made in this scale by another manufacturer, is a later and more capable version with a different engine and different armament, so do not confuse it with the early Mk.I.
The kit builds straight from the box and rewards care rather than a pile of extras. Glue with liquid cement for plastic; you will hardly need any filler. In 1:32 every mistake shows, so use primer and an airbrush. The early RAF scheme (brown and green above, a light underside) was sprayed through templates, so a hard demarcation is reproduced with a cut mask. The interior of early Spitfires was in a brighter green than the later standard. Paint the interior before you close the fuselage, put a gloss coat under the decals and finish with a wash in the lines and a matte coat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
