A set of masks for spraying shadows along the control surfaces, ailerons and flaps of a Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb model in 1:32 scale. The sprayed shadow imitates the gap between a fixed surface and a deflected one, so the model gains depth without a single cut into the plastic.
When to use the effect and when better not to
It works best on a model displayed on a stand and viewed from above and from the side; there the eye supplies the deflection for itself. On a model behind glass in a cabinet, seen from one angle only, the effect may be pointless. It also holds that the illusion works only in reasonable measure: from a meter away the dark stripe should read as a soft shadow, not as a line. The set does not allow the parts to be deflected for real; the surfaces remain a fixed part of the molding.
The Spitfire Mk.Vb was one of the most widespread variants of the type. On its elliptical wing and rounded tail the ailerons, flaps and tail control surfaces form large areas with pronounced dividing gaps, which is exactly why shading shows better on it than on aircraft with angular outlines.
Thin the paint more than you are used to and lower the pressure; this is misting, not a covering coat. Use the same camouflage shade with a small addition of a darker color, not black. Spray in three or four passes and look at the result from a distance in between: as soon as the shadow reads as a line from a meter away, you are past the limit. Take the mask off right after the last coat has set, so that the transition stays soft, and unify the effect with a final matte varnish.
