About product

MH models 1:32 Westland Whirlwind F.Mk.I - vacuum-formed canopy

A clear cockpit canopy drawn under vacuum from thin transparent film, intended for a model of the Westland Whirlwind in 1:32 scale. It is not a kit of an airplane but a replacement part: compared with the injection-molded canopy from the kit it is noticeably thinner, so the frames look more realistic and the view into the cockpit is better. A thin canopy also makes it possible to build the model with the canopy open without the thickness of the material giving the scale away.

The real subject

The Westland Whirlwind was a British twin-engine single-seat fighter of the late 1930s. It was marked by concentrated gun armament in the nose and a slender fuselage with a good view forward. It was committed with only a small number of squadrons and built in limited numbers, so it belongs among the less usual subjects that catch the eye in a display case. In 1:32 scale the division of the canopy and the framing stand out, which is why the outlay on a thin clear canopy pays off at once.

Building and painting tips

A vacuum-formed part comes as part of a thin sheet, from which it is cut out along its outline. First cut it roughly with scissors or a sharp knife with a generous margin and only then work your way to the outline by sanding: press the film onto fine abrasive paper laid on a flat board and sand the material away with a circular motion. Work a little at a time and keep trying the fit on the fuselage - material can always be taken away, never added. Small scratches disappear after polishing with a compound for plastics or after dipping the part in gloss clear varnish, which evens out the surface. Only a clear canopy glue that stays transparent once dry may be used; cyanoacrylate glue and cement for plastic would fog the clear part beyond repair. Mask the frames with narrow strips of masking tape or with a ready-made mask and spray the shade of the interior first, only then the external finish.

Who the part is for

  • modelers building the Westland Whirlwind in 1:32 scale
  • builders who want the cockpit canopy open
  • more experienced modelers with experience of cutting out vacuum-formed parts
  • those who object to the thickness of the clear parts from an ordinary kit

This is a replacement clear part, not a stand-alone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A clear canopy drawn with heat over a mold from thin transparent film. It is substantially thinner than the injection-molded part from a kit, but it has to be cut out and sanded to the outline.

A clear glue intended for canopies, which stays transparent once dry. Cyanoacrylate glue and cement for plastic cannot be used, because they would fog the clear surface.

Cut it out with a margin and work your way to the outline by sanding on fine paper laid on a flat board. Keep trying the fit on the fuselage as you go.

Scratches come out by polishing with a compound for plastics or by dipping the part in gloss clear varnish, which evens out the surface.
