A masking set from Peewit in 1:144 scale for a model of the A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft. It is not a kit and not a spare part: these are masks cut to shape which are stuck onto the clear canopy so that after spraying the glazing stays transparent and the framing gets a sharp edge. In 1:144 scale cutting masking tape by hand for frames this tiny is practically impossible, so a cut set saves more work here than in any other scale.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II is an American twin-engine attack aircraft designed around its cannon, the seven-barrel GAU-8/A Avenger, whose barrel takes up a substantial part of the nose. The design is subordinated to survival over the battlefield: the pilot sits in a titanium bathtub, the controls have duplicated mechanical backups and both turbofan engines are set high above the rear fuselage between a pair of vertical tails, where the wing and the fuselage shield them. The aircraft is slow and agile, can operate from improvised strips and carry a great deal of armament on underwing pylons. Its characteristic bubble canopy with its good downward view is exactly the detail the masking set deals with.
Degrease the clear part first and let it dry completely; keep your fingers off the visible face, because a print will show through the paint. Lift the individual mask off the sheet with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it on the glass and press it from the center toward the edges so that no bubble is left underneath. Then run a toothpick along the edge: how tightly the edge beds down decides whether the transition will be sharp. Spray thinly and in several coats; a heavy coat likes to tear away beyond the edge of the mask when it is peeled off. It works well to spray the interior shade of the cockpit first and only then the covering outer color. Take the masks off shortly after the paint has dried, not once the finish has cured completely.
