Smoke pods in 1:48 scale, of the kind that display team aircraft hang on their wingtip pylons. A resin casting; the pylons themselves come from the kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
So that the audience can follow a maneuver even from the back rows, display team aircraft leave a dense white trail behind them. Machines without a built-in generator solve it simply: a pod of similar outline is hung on the wingtip pylon where a guided missile would normally go. Inside is a small oil tank and, at the rear end, a nozzle from which the oil is injected into the stream of hot gases. There it vaporizes at once and a white line stays behind the aircraft, holding in the air for several tens of seconds.
The pods belong on the outermost pylons, so seat them symmetrically and on one level; the surest way is to measure the distance from the wingtip with calipers, as an estimate by eye always drifts. The finish tends to be white or in team colors, but the rear area around the nozzle soon builds up a coat of oil and never stays clean. A restrained brownish glaze from top to bottom therefore reads convincingly and gives the model the character of use. Wash and degrease the part before painting.
Anyone building a scene from an air show can add an oil cart nearby or a figure at the wingtip. The pod itself is unobtrusive on a finished model, but anyone who knows will spot it at once. Measure the position from a photograph of the particular fit, because the mounting differs from one team and type to another.
