About product

Wooden snow fences 1:32 and 1:35 (Model Scene)

A scenery accessory for building dioramas, supplied as a laser-cut wooden part for assembly. The 1:32 to 1:35 range of scales means that the snow fences can be used both with vehicles and figures in the usual military 1:35 scale and with larger 1:32 models. A snow fence is not a fence in the proper sense — it is a free-standing slatted wall that was put up in open country for the winter.

The real subject

Snow fences are set up in windy stretches along roads and railroad lines. They are not meant to hold snow back by force but to slow the wind, so that the snow settles in the lee in front of the barrier and does not build drifts on the roadway or the track. That is exactly why the slats have gaps between them. Wooden snow fences were the most widespread solution in Central Europe throughout the twentieth century, and in a winter scene they are an immediately understandable sign of both place and season.

Building and painting tips

Break the parts carefully out of the carrier sheet and true the cut edges with fine abrasive paper. Glue the wood with thin PVA wood glue or with cyanoacrylate; before building, let the assembly dry out completely on a flat surface so that the fence does not warp. Snow fences are set into a scene in a row, leaning slightly and never perfectly parallel — irregularity is desirable here. Leave the wood in its natural tone, treated only with a thinned gray-brown glaze. In a winter diorama apply a thin layer of imitation snow to the windward side and build a drift at ground level that partly buries the barrier. The lower part of the slats is usually the most weathered.

Who the accessory is for

  • Builders of winter dioramas in 1:32 to 1:35 scale
  • Modelers of scenes along roads and railroad lines
  • Anyone interested in landscape scenes without buildings
  • Those who want an unusual, easily readable element in a scene

The accessory is supplied as a laser-cut wooden part for assembly, unpainted. The glue, the paints and any further scenery materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A free-standing wooden slatted wall put up in windy stretches along roads and railroad lines. It slows the wind, so the snow settles in the lee and does not build drifts on the roadway.

The barrier is not meant to hold the snow back but to slow the airflow. A solid wall would work worse than one with gaps.

The manufacturer gives a range of 1:32 to 1:35, so they can be used both with larger 1:32 models and with the usual 1:35 vehicles and figures.

Build them in a row, leaning slightly and not perfectly parallel. Apply a thin imitation snow to the windward side and build a drift at ground level.
