This figure from Black Dog in 1:35 scale represents a war correspondent, a reporter accompanying a military unit. It is a figure added to a scene for a different reason than a soldier: it adds no firepower but a narrative line. The viewer grasps at once that something is happening and that someone is recording it.
Correspondents have accompanied fighting units since the rise of the mass printed media, and in modern conflicts they have become part of the line-up almost as a matter of course. They move about in civilian or semi-military clothing with ballistic protection added, carry equipment instead of a weapon and usually stand off the main axis of the action, a little to one side, looking where the lens is looking. This detachment is very valuable to a figure modeler: the figure naturally leads the viewer's eye to what matters in the scene.
Civilian trousers and a jacket will take a tone that differs from the uniforms of the figures around them; that very difference is the point of the whole figure. All the same, choose a subdued palette, so that the correspondent does not become a colored target in the middle of the composition. In the scene, place him to one side of the main group and turn him so that his gaze leads into the action. Dusting will unify the footwear and the trouser legs with the terrain and tie the figure to the rest of the composition.
