About product

F4F-3 Wildcat, early version, machine gun barrels and pitot tube 1:72 (MASTER)

A set of turned metal parts for models of the F4F-3 Wildcat fighter in the pre-war version. It contains the barrels of the 12.7 mm Browning machine guns with the longitudinal holes of the cooling jacket and an early pitot tube, exactly those features that changed on this machine between production batches. It is not a kit but an accessory for a plastic model that is already built or part built.

Why reach for metal parts

A metal barrel has a real bore, while the plastic part is solid and a blind muzzle is obvious at first glance in 1:72 scale. Drilling a plastic barrel works only up to a point, because it is thin and the drill easily wanders off axis. The turned part is straight as well, it keeps a constant diameter along its whole length, and with multi-barrel armament it helps to keep every barrel protruding equally from the leading edge. The pitot tube on the wing is then a classic candidate for breaking off, and the metal part solves that problem for good. The distinction between the early and the late version is a matter of fact, not cosmetics: on later machines the barrel jackets have round holes, and the manufacturer lists a separate matching set for them.

Fitting and painting tips

Cut off the plastic barrels and drill holes in the leading edge of the wing matching the diameter of the metal parts. Work from a smaller drill to a larger one and keep the depth the same, so that all the barrels protrude equally. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue, and with a looser fit rather with the gel type, which gives you time to line things up. Degrease the metal with alcohol and use a metal primer. Steel parts look better in a dark metallic shade or after burnishing than under a covering paint. Fit the parts only once the painting and the decals are done, and do not press on them when cleaning the model.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the F4F-3 Wildcat in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers building specifically the pre-war version of the machine
  • Those who want barrels with a real bore instead of solid plastic parts
  • Builders whose pitot tubes keep breaking off

The set is an accessory for a plastic model. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

Early pre-war machines had longitudinal holes in the barrel cooling jacket, later ones round holes. This set is the early variant, and the manufacturer lists the late one separately.

In 1:72 scale the plastic part is very thin and a drill easily wanders off axis in it. A turned barrel has the bore ready and stays straight.

The exact number of parts is stated by the manufacturer on the packaging. The set contains the machine gun barrels and an early pitot tube.

Yes, the manufacturer lists the same subject for the 1:48 and 1:32 scales as well.
