The Super Hornet is an American carrier multirole aircraft in the F/A-18E version with one crew member and the F/A-18F with two; the EA-18G Growler was built on the same airframe as a machine for electronic warfare. On the sides of the forward fuselage this family carries an angle of attack probe. The pivoting vane sets itself into the airflow and passes the onboard systems the figure for the angle at which the aircraft is meeting that flow. The indication for the pilot in slow flight and the guidance of the machine down the glide path when landing on a carrier both rest on it. On a model it is a tiny component that the part from the kit can only approximate, because it has to be thicker for strength.
The replacement is rendered in 1:72 scale in the late type. The early type of the same probe is a separate product, and the choice follows the subject being built.
Cut the original part off the kit with a sharp blade and sand the area flat so that the replacement seats without a gap. Cut off surplus material and traces of manufacture a little away from the part and sand the rest down. Wash and degrease the part before gluing, or neither glue nor paint will hold. It is glued with super glue applied in a minimal amount on the tip of a pin. Fit the probe only after the paints have been sprayed and have dried, at the very end of the build, because every further handling of the model risks breaking it off.
