The angle of attack probe is one of those small things that are easy to overlook on a real aircraft but that the onboard systems cannot do without. On the sides of the forward fuselage of the Super Hornet and the Growler sits a pivoting vane that sets itself into the airflow and reports the angle at which the aircraft is meeting that flow. The indication for the pilot in slow flight rests on it, and above all the precise guidance of the machine down the glide path when landing on a carrier, where the flying takes place at the edge of what the wing will carry.
The replacement probes in the late type are rendered in 1:32 scale. In a large scale the difference between a part of scale thinness and a thicker molding from the kit shows most, because the viewer inspects the nose of the model from close up and every deviation of shape grows with it.
Cut the original parts off the kit with a sharp blade and sand the areas flat so that the replacement seats without a gap. Cut off surplus material and traces of manufacture a little away from the part and sand the rest down carefully. Wash and degrease the parts before gluing. They are glued with super glue in a minimal amount applied on the tip of a pin. Fit them only after the paints have been sprayed and have dried, at the end of the build, so that they do not break off while the model is handled. Where exactly the parts belong is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
For modelers of large scales who build the Super Hornet or the Growler in 1:32 scale and want even the small protruding parts on the nose to be right. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
