Master Box, a Ukrainian maker of figures, runs an extensive offering of themes outside the usual military subjects. This figure opens the Gold Fever range within a broader cycle devoted to the American West; the name lists it as the first number of the series. The 1:35 scale allows it to be combined with ordinary diorama accessories.
The gold rushes of the nineteenth century transformed whole regions of North America within a few months. Thousands of people moved into the valleys with the barest of property, makeshift camps went up and the value of everything other than a find went aside. A prospector's equipment was plain: a gold pan, a pickaxe, a shovel, leather bags and clothing that would stand weeks in the field and in the water. That very plainness makes the theme a rewarding task: no uniforms, no regulation colors, just cloth, leather and dirt.
With no uniform, every support in the regulations falls away and taste decides. Keep to a natural range of earth tones and leave one part of the clothing as a pronounced accent, otherwise the figure will blend into a single area. The shirt and the pants come out well if you add a warmer, not a darker, tone into the folds. Complete the leather of the bags and the boots with wear along the edges. A base with a stony bottom, a plank weir and water fills the story out better than any detail on the figure itself.
