Dynamo-Models lists under this name a bust of a member of the French Foreign Legion equipped for movement in snow. The subject turns up only rarely among figure sculpture, which makes it an interesting addition to a collection.
The French Foreign Legion was set up in 1831 and over its history has served in deserts, in the tropics and in high mountain terrain. For operations on slopes and in snow, specialized companies arose within it whose members went through ski and climbing training. The equipment of such units differs noticeably from ordinary infantry: it includes camouflage oversuits for snow, goggles against the glare, heavy gloves and adapted footwear. The combination of white and muted colors is characteristic of this kind of subject.
A large white area is more demanding than colorful clothing, because nothing can be hidden in it. The proven procedure is to start from a light gray and add white only on the highest places. Tone the shadows on the sunlit parts toward blue and in the shade toward ocher instead. The glass of the goggles will gain depth if a dark base is laid under the gloss varnish, and skin exposed to frost and to the reflection of the sun will stand a warmer shade than the one you choose for figures from the lowlands.
