About product

The 105 mm M-68 barrel with a thermal shroud for the M60A3 in 1:35 scale — Aber

This is a turned replacement barrel for a model of the M60A3 tank in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit but a single, highly visible part: the barrel is the longest and most conspicuous feature of the whole model, and a plastic barrel from the box always has a parting seam on it that has to be sanded away all the way round. With a turned part that problem disappears — the barrel is perfectly round along its whole length and the muzzle has a real opening, not just a suggested depression. According to its name the set is in the form with a thermal shroud, that is as the gun looked on machines of the M60A3 version.

The real subject

The M60A3 carried a 105 mm tank gun designated M68, a licensed derivative of the British gun of the same caliber, which appeared on other Western tanks of the same period as well. The thermal shroud on the barrel is a jacket that limits uneven heating of the barrel by the sun, by rain and by its own firing. An unevenly heated barrel bends slightly, and on a gun part this long that tells on accuracy. On earlier machines of this family the thermal shroud was missing, so its presence is one of the pointers by which the versions are told apart.

Building and painting tips

A turned part is bonded into the plastic cradle with super glue; cement for plastic does not hold on metal. Try the contact surface in the gun mantlet dry first and widen it with a round file if need be, so that the barrel seats straight — a barrel seated crooked spoils even an otherwise fine model. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and use a primer; without it the paint holds badly on smooth metal and rubs off in handling. Fill the muzzle with a dark shade with a slight hint of soot; a sharp black ring looks unnatural.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of modern armored vehicles in 1:35.
  • Modelers who are bothered by the parting seam on a plastic barrel.
  • Those building the M60A3 who want the correct form of the gun with the thermal shroud.

The package holds the replacement barrel only. The model, glue and paints are not included.

A plastic barrel has a parting seam from the mold along its whole length that has to be sanded away all the way round, and the round cross-section is easily lost in the process. A turned part is round along its whole length and the muzzle has a real opening.

With super glue based on cyanoacrylate. Try the contact surface in the gun mantlet dry first and widen it with a round file if need be, so that the barrel seats straight.

Yes. Degrease it with alcohol and use a primer. Without a base coat the paint holds badly on smooth metal and rubs off in handling.
