QMT 1:72 Messerschmitt Bf-109E-3/Bf-109E-4/Bf-109E-7 — wheel bay masks are die-cut self-adhesive masks that protect the already painted inside of the bays while the camouflage is sprayed.
Responsibility details are not available.
The QMT set is an aid for painting, not a component of a model. The masks follow the outline of the wheel bays exactly and are used at the moment the interior of the bay is finished and the primer and the camouflage of the lower surface come next. A single designation covers the E-3, E-4 and E-7 configurations.
Most of the trouble arises not when the mask is applied but when it is lifted off. Take the mask off when the last coat of paint is dry to the touch but is not yet fully cured, so typically within hours, not days. Pull it slowly and at an angle backward, over itself, not perpendicular upward, otherwise the paint at the edge will take a piece of the film with it. Nicking the edge of the paint lightly along the edge of the mask with a sharp scalpel helps. If you are matting or clear-coating the model, take the masks off before the coat so that the edge is not sealed in under a further layer.
The Bf 109E is the older development series of the German fighter, with square wingtips and bracing struts on the horizontal tail surfaces. The E-3, E-4 and E-7 versions differed mainly in their armament, their canopy glazing and the ability to carry an external store; the shape of the wheel bays stayed the same, which is why one masking set covers them all.
The package contains masks only. The kit and the paints are not part of it.
