The entrances to war harbors were closed off with suspended nets meant to hold back a submarine and a fired torpedo alike. It was an inconspicuous but ever-present part of coastal defense. The accessory 1:35 Antisubmarine net from the manufacturer Black Dog model carries this motif over into a large scale, where the structure of the mesh is easy to read.
A net is one of the few elements able to give a diorama depth without a large build. Stretched across the composition it separates the foreground from the background, leads the eye and suggests events beyond the edge of the base. It comes into its own as a barrier across an entrance, as material stacked on a breakwater or as a section pulled out during repair.
A net that is not stretched taut as a string looks the most natural - let it sag slightly between the points of attachment. A dark steel base, brownish rusted patches and drybrushing on the protruding mesh will create the impression of steel long exposed to water. The lower part, which would be below the surface, will bear a greenish deposit.
An interesting effect arises when the net partly covers the main model. The viewer fills the missing part in himself and the scene gains the impression of a space that carries on beyond the base. It works just as well as a foreground when photographing a finished diorama.
