The first part of the Star Decals Vietnam theme is devoted to a single type, the Centurion Mk 5 tank in Australian service. The set holds markings for a model in 1:35 scale and it is an accessory with which a finished vehicle is placed with a particular deployment, not a kit.
The British Centurion became the main battle tank of the Australian army for many years, and in South East Asia it was the only type of heavy tracked vehicle Australia sent into action. Centurion tanks served in the South Vietnamese theater from the end of the 1960s to the beginning of the 1970s and were subordinate to the Australian task force. In terrain full of damp, red laterite and dense vegetation it turned out that a slow tank with solid armor was of great value against field fortifications and bunkers, even at a time when the sense of deploying heavy tanks in the jungle was being disputed.
Australian Centurions are rewarding precisely because they tended to be heavily dusted and scuffed. Lay the markings down therefore before you set about the dust shades, otherwise they will look out of place in their cleanness. A decal softener is useful, because the hull sides are broken up by fenders, tools and grab handles.
