About product

Turned barrel for the 76.2 mm Pak 36(r) in 1:35 scale

This is not a kit but a replacement part for one. The Polish manufacturer Aber makes its barrels by turning them from metal, so they have a perfectly circular cross section, an open muzzle and a straight axis, three things that injection-molded plastic always has trouble with. On artillery subjects the barrel is the most conspicuous feature of the whole model, so the replacement pays off even on an otherwise simple kit.

The real subject

Pak 36(r) was the German designation of a 76.2 mm anti-tank gun that came about by modifying captured Soviet guns. The German side reworked them for a more powerful round and added a muzzle brake; the result was a weapon with markedly better penetrating effect than the standard anti-tank gun of the day. The gun was used both in towed form and as the armament of tank destroyers on the chassis of light tracked vehicles. It is precisely this combination that makes a replacement barrel a usable part for more than one subject: it suits a model of the gun on its own as well as the vehicles that carried it.

Installation and painting tips

Cut the plastic barrel off in such a way that enough material is left for gluing, and level the mating surface with a file. Degrease the metal part first, otherwise the paint will not hold on it. It is bonded with super glue (cyanoacrylate); with the greater weight of metal it helps to secure the joint with a small pin of wire as well. Before painting, apply a primer intended for metal and let it cure thoroughly. Darken the muzzle of the barrel and add a fine soot trace; bring out the transition to the barrel jacket with a dark wash. A dry brush will pick out the edges and the machined surfaces.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of artillery and anti-tank subjects in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who replace plastic barrels with metal ones
  • Those who build a model for a competition and count on a close view
  • More experienced modelers used to gluing metal with super glue

The accessory is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a standalone replacement barrel. The base kit of the gun or the vehicle has to be bought separately.

The name does not state a particular target kit. Before buying, compare the length and the diameter of the barrel with the part in your own kit.

Bond it with super glue after degreasing. Before painting use a primer intended for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold.

Check the contents of the package beyond what the name says on the packaging.
