About product

British Scammell Tank Transporter, the late version (Late Goose Neck), 1:35, Thunder Model

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British combination for transporting tanks in the Second World War: the Scammell Pioneer TRMU30 (6x4) tractor and the thirty-ton TRCU30 semi-trailer with the so-called gooseneck. The gooseneck is named after the cranked shape of the front of the semi-trailer, and the designation late version refers to the later form of this combination. The package contains photo-etched sheet and decals, plastic tires, a fully rendered engine and a well-worked driver's cab with doors and windows that can be positioned. Thunder Model specializes in British vehicles of the Second World War in 1:35 and the Scammell Pioneer range is among its flagship sets.

The real subject

A tank cannot make a long move under its own power: it ruins its tracks, burns an enormous amount of fuel and breaks up the roads. That is why it is carried on a huge semi-trailer. A tank transporter is therefore just as essential to an army as the tank itself: without it, armored units will not get to where they are needed. The Scammell Pioneer was a British heavy tractor with 6x4 drive, powered by a Gardner six-cylinder diesel. It was created in the 1930s and the British army used it during the war in several roles, as an artillery tractor, a recovery vehicle and precisely as a tank transporter. The Pioneer combination with the thirty-ton semi-trailer carried British tanks across North Africa, Italy and Western Europe and belongs among the iconic images of British wartime logistics.

Building and painting tips

First assemble the frame of the tractor, the engine and the running gear thoroughly: once the cab is closed you will not get at them. Glue with liquid cement for plastic and spray the parts with primer before painting. Bend the photo-etched parts over a metal ruler and glue them with super glue. The British khaki and olive base color is brought to life by a filter and by washes in the recesses; on the load bed of the semi-trailer and in the wheel arch use pigments for the effect of dust and mud. The combination is an excellent basis for a diorama with a tank loaded on it: any British tank in 1:35 that you already have will serve.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers of British vehicles of the Second World War
  • Anyone interested in military logistics and less usual vehicles
  • Builders of dioramas, as a loaded tank makes for a striking scene
  • More advanced builders who will appreciate the engine and the detailed cab
  • Collectors whose collection of tanks in 1:35 is missing a transporter

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is the shape of the cranked front of the semi-trailer, which resembles the neck of a goose. The tag late version refers to the later form of the combination; we recommend checking the exact differences from the earlier form against the instructions in the package.

Yes, the kit contains both the tractor and the semi-trailer, so you will build the whole combination. A tank to load on it is not included.

A long move under its own power ruins a tank's tracks, means an enormous consumption of fuel and damages the roads. Transport on a semi-trailer is faster, cheaper and easier on the vehicle, which is why a tank transporter is as important to an army as the tank.

It is a more involved kit with an engine, a cab and photo-etch, so it is rather for a more experienced modeler. A beginner with patience and basic equipment (liquid cement, primer, super glue for the photo-etch) can take it on, though.
