About product

BTR-152D, a Soviet wheeled armored personnel carrier 1:35 (UM)

The kit captures the Soviet wheeled armored personnel carrier of the BTR-152 range in the version designated D, in 1:35 scale. It is made by the Ukrainian brand UM, known above all for models of armored vehicles with fine surface detail and a fairly intricate division of parts. The package contains plastic parts to be assembled; the model is neither painted nor glued. The 1:35 format means a finished model about twenty centimeters long, which shows well in a diorama with figures.

The real subject

The BTR-152 was a wheeled armored personnel carrier created after the Second World War on a truck chassis. The design was based on a production chassis with three axles, onto which an open welded hull for the crew and the carried section was set. The vehicle was built in many forms differing in drive, armament and equipment and stayed in use for a long time in a number of countries. It belongs to the generation of hardware that was still looking for a balanced ratio between cross-country mobility and protection for the crew.

Building and painting tips

With wheeled carriers it pays to start from the chassis. First assemble the axles and the steering dry and check that all six wheels stand in the same plane, otherwise the model will rock on its base. The open hull is visible from the inside, so paint and shade the interior before you close the sides up. The plastic parts are joined with a thin modeling cement for plastic applied by capillary action into the joint. Use a primer for the base coat and spray the paint with an airbrush in thin coats; leave the tires in a matte black slightly different from the chassis. Build the weathering with a wash into the recesses and dry pigments for mud and dust effects, working from the bottom upward.

Who the model is for

  • Builders of postwar armored vehicles in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who want a wheeled carrier among tracked vehicles in their collection
  • Diorama builders, where the vehicle is completed by figures and terrain
  • More experienced beginners who have already managed a basic vehicle build

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a plastic kit in 1:35 scale, with the parts divided in the usual way into hull, chassis and accessories. The number of parts is given in the instructions in the box.

Count on plastic parts only; do not expect figures, accessories or interior fittings beyond the standard castings. The exact contents of the package are given by the contents list on the box.

Classic modeling cement for polystyrene. The thin version proves itself, as it is applied into the joint with a brush and drawn in by capillary action, so it does not overflow onto visible surfaces.

After the base coat and a matte clear coat, use a dark wash in the recesses and then dry pigments on the lower parts of the hull, the wheels and the fenders. Always apply the dust from the bottom upward and fade it out higher up.
