About product

Copper State Models 1:35 — a Canadian Motor MG Brigade officer putting his helmet on

This is a single figure in 1:35 scale from the figure range of Copper State Models. It is neither a vehicle kit nor a whole group of figures, but a stand-alone accessory intended to bring a finished model, a display case or a diorama to life. The figure is conceived as a genre scene: the figure is caught in movement, at the moment of putting a helmet on, so it carries a story of its own and works well even as a single piece on a small base.

The casting and its preparation

Figures of this size are supplied as accurate castings, usually divided into a torso and several separate parts, so that the details of the equipment stand out. Before building, rinse the parts in lukewarm soapy water to remove any mold release residue, and let them dry out properly. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp knife or a saw a little away from the part and sand the remainder down with fine abrasive paper; never snap them off. Small parting seams on the sleeves and trouser legs need only a flat pass with a scalpel. Glue the joints with cyanoacrylate glue and fill any gaps with modeling putty. When sanding, protect your airways and work with extraction or at least with ventilation.

Painting tips

First spray the whole figure with a thin coat of primer — it gives the paint adhesion and at the same time reveals any unfinished work. Paint the uniform and the equipment with a brush in layers: a base shade, a darker pooling into the folds and a lighter dry brush on the edges of the cloth. The face and the hands are the most demanding part; it pays to tackle them separately and, once dry, to unify them with a faint glaze. Pick out the metal parts of the equipment with graphite or with a metallic paint applied dry. At the end, seal the whole figure with a matte varnish and polish only selected elements, for example the leather straps, with a semi-matte one.

Who the figure is for

  • modelers who want to add a living figure to a diorama or to a vehicle
  • collectors of figures in 1:35 scale
  • more experienced painters who enjoy working on a face and on cloth
  • builders of historical scenes of the First World War period

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
