A concrete block is a simple shape, but it gives a scene gravity at once. Its presence says that the place is being defended and that heavy vehicles are expected to pass. Concrete also ages unevenly: the lower edges tend to be knocked and dirtied by wheels, while the upper surface is faded. If you are unifying the surface with the rest of the scene in color, work in light layers and leave the differences between the individual pieces, so that they do not look like one cast whole.
