The groundwork determines the layout of the area and the shape of the quay, and with that it decides the composition - where movement will run, where the vehicles will stand and from where the viewer will look at the scene.
A harbor is an unusually rewarding setting for diorama work. It has the firm edge of a quay, which bounds the scene naturally, it has a horizontal surface for vehicles as well as tall elements in the form of cranes and warehouses, and above all it offers the meeting of two environments - land and water. It is this transition that gives the view the depth a purely land-based scene does not have. Harbor subjects are also exceptionally rich historically: military vehicles, supplies and people were transshipped here, and that on both sides of the front from the 1930s to the end of the war.
The groundwork is combined with vehicles, figures and harbor accessories of the same scale; in 1:35 the choice is widest. It works well to use asymmetry - a quay moved off the axis looks more natural than dividing the area exactly in half. It also pays to settle the main line of sight in advance and to choose the angle of the vehicles and the direction the figures look accordingly.
