A set of resin castings of dry, dead tree trunks in 1:35 scale from the Polish maker Mantis Miniatures. It is a diorama accessory, an element of scenery rather than a model of a vehicle or a figure. The castings are supplied unpainted and before use they have to be cleaned up, separated from the casting blocks and painted. The texture of the bark, the cracks and the stubs of the branches are molded straight into the casting, so there is no laborious sculpting of wood out of putty or natural materials.
A dry trunk is a rewarding element in a diorama: it creates a vertical axis for the composition, hides a transition in the terrain that did not come off, separates the planes of the scene and carries a mood without drawing attention away from the main model. Unlike a tree in leaf it needs no laborious work on a crown and it does not overshadow the vehicle or the figures. It works well in battlefield scenes, in abandoned landscapes and as an addition to terrain bases. The 1:35 scale matches the usual models of military vehicles and figures of the same scale.
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water to remove the mold release residue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw and sand the cut surface; do the sanding wet and with respiratory protection. A trunk can be shortened or leaned as the composition needs, since the lower part is set into the terrain anyway. Glue it with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or epoxy; where it is set into modeling putty, the putty itself is enough. Start the painting from a dark base so that the depth of the cracks stays readable; then lighten the surfaces gradually with drybrushing and finish by adding gray-green or ocher touches for moss, lichen and weathered wood. A light wash unifies the whole, and dust pigment settles the trunk into the terrain.
This is a diorama accessory, not a model. Paints, glue, terrain materials and figures are not included in the package.
