The firm Faun-Werke arose in Nuremberg shortly after the First World War from the joining of two engineering works and turned to heavy utility equipment, from municipal vehicles through crane chassis to trucks of the highest weight classes. The L900 type from the end of the thirties was the summit of this line and the Wehrmacht placed it among the machines intended for recovery and for moving oversized loads.
The castings carry the third of the tread designs the supplier lists for this vehicle. The difference between the variants is in the definition of the design, not in the diameter or in the width of the rim, so they can be combined on one chassis. Mixed footwear was usual with field units, because replacement tires were got hold of where they could be, and a match of design on every wheel was rather the exception.
The shape of the tire is caught at the moment a loaded vehicle presses on it. The bottom is settled, the walls pushed out to the sides and the footprint wider than on a wheel without load. On a finished model it is one of the details the eye notices sooner than fine etched brass.
It is worth thinking over the turn of the wheels to the sides at the same time. A settled footprint looks best when it agrees with the direction the vehicle last drove in, and on a model seated in a bend or in worn ruts it makes a noticeable difference. Front wheels turned a few degrees moreover bring life to the otherwise stiff stance of the whole machine.
Fitting calls for no cutting into the chassis. It is enough to remove the remains of the supports, level the face under the hub and glue the part on. The work is a matter of a few minutes per wheel and the result shows above all on a model built on a flat base, where the contact area is clearly visible.
