1:35 Figures-Base

Figures-Base in 1:35 scale

A scenic display base for figures in 1:35 scale from the German brand RT-Diorama. It is not a model of a vehicle or a figure but a surface in its own right under a figure. It is the base that decides whether a figure looks like an object torn out of context or like part of a particular place and action - which is why figure modelers keep one as standard equipment.

What a base like this is for

A figure on its own standing on a bare board always looks a little unfinished. A scenic base gives it context: it suggests the surface the figure is walking on and gives a reason why it is standing the way it is. On a small area you can also work quickly and without a large outlay - it is the easiest way into diorama work without starting with an extensive view straight away.

Placing it in the scene

1:35 is the most widespread scale for military figures, so the choice of figure is wide. It works well to place the figure away from the geometric center of the area - moving it to one side looks more natural than exact centering. It is also worth thinking about which way the figure looks: a gaze out of the area opens the view up, a gaze inward closes it. With a single figure it is most effective to keep the accessories to a minimum so that it remains the main subject.

Who it is for

• Figure modelers who want to present a figure in context rather than on a bare board
• Beginners in diorama work looking for a small area to try it out on
• Competition modelers in the single-figure categories
• Collectors who want a consistent presentation for a whole figure collection
