Thinner pipework is in fact the more interesting kind: runs of steam, compressed air, oil and cooling water go along walls, wind around machines and end at valves and gauges. Even the thinnest runs are joined with flanges, though, because a joint that can be taken apart is a condition of maintenance. That is exactly why adding a few collars to a scene is enough for the viewer to see at once that this is not wire but pipework.
The smaller size allows runs to be led closer to the walls and into places where thick pipework will not fit - along a stair, around a doorway, across the ceiling of a workshop. It works well to plan the run so that it leads somewhere and ends somewhere: at a tank, at a machine, at a passage through a wall. The flanges suit exactly these nodal points. When runs of two different thicknesses meet in one view, the scene gains a hierarchy and looks far more complex than it really is.
