A figure complemented by a bicycle at a ratio of 1:35 from the manufacturer Dynamo-Models is set apart from the other numbers by what stands directly in its name: a bicycle goes with the soldier. The man is wheeling it alongside him, so the pair of man and machine forms a single compositional unit with a strong horizontal line.
A bicycle is an unobtrusive but exceptionally effective detail in a terrain scene. It gives scale to the objects around it, fills the empty space between figures and naturally leads the eye along the length of the scene. It is worth giving it time: the thin frame tubes and fenders take only careful sanding and gentle pressure, otherwise the thinnest place is exactly where it will snap.
Work on the bicycle and the figure separately and join them only at the end, otherwise you will not reach the lower parts of the frame. A painted frame takes a gentle sheen while the clothing stays matte, and that difference in surface shows a great deal in the result. Apply dust and mud with thinned pigments from the bottom upward, so that they settle where a real road would have left them. The chain and the pedals deserve a darker, slightly metallic tone, otherwise the whole bicycle looks like a solid casting with no moving parts.
