1:35 German Dispatch Rider Standing With A Motorcycle

The real subject

The dispatch rider was one of the ordinary figures in the field with the German army. He delivered orders and reports between staffs and units wherever a line did not reach or where a message was not to be sent by radio. The figure catches such a rider at the moment when he stands beside his motorcycle: the attitude is calm, with no forward movement, and reads as a brief stop while a dispatch is handed over.

What you can build with the figure

The 1:35 scale matches the vast majority of military vehicle kits, so the figure will fit into a scene with a motorcycle, a half-track, an off-road car or a truck. A standing figure has the advantage of needing neither a seat nor an exact fit into a cab, so you can place it almost anywhere: at the edge of a road, in front of the gate of a farmstead or among parked vehicles. A pair of figures need only be turned to face each other and the viewer will fill in the story himself.

Building and painting tips

• Wash and degrease the parts before painting; paint takes badly to a greasy surface.
• Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little from the part and sand the remainder down carefully.
• Fill the seams at the shoulders and the waist; with figures it is just this transition that shows most.
• Choose the shade of the uniform and the equipment according to the subject you want to portray.
• Work the shadows and highlights on the face and hands last; this small area decides the whole impression.
