What sets this item apart from the sister sets is the year 1941 given in the name; it is accompanied by the abbreviations ABP and SCHWELM, that is two period marks. The containers belong to the equipment without which no motorized column could manage, and on a model they therefore look natural almost anywhere there is a vehicle or a supply of material.
Fuel was the limiting factor of every advance into depth. Tankers reached only where a passable road led, and the last stretch was therefore managed only by hands and portable containers. From that springs their omnipresence in period photographs: stacked on fenders, lined up on a cargo bed, lashed to a roof. Containers for water were distinguished from fuel ones by markings, so that no mix-up would occur, which would have had unpleasant consequences.
What adds most to credibility is unevenness. Leave one piece clean, the second dusty, the third with a rubbed corner and a trace of spilled contents around the neck. Settle the dust from the top down, whereas the rubbing by contrast only in the places a man really touched. A small change of shade between the individual containers helps too, because in reality they never came from one delivery.
