1:35 GERMAN WEHRMACHT JERRY CANS

German jerrycans in 1:35 scale

An accessory set of German jerrycans in 1:35 scale, that is of the containers practically every unit carried with it in the Second World War. Jerrycans are among the most rewarding small equipment there is: hung on the fenders, stacked on the bed or scattered on the ground they give away at once that a vehicle is in service and not in a display case.

The real subject

The German standard twenty-liter jerrycan came about in the 1930s and became the pattern for the whole world. Its recognition features are the three handles side by side on the top, thanks to which the can could be carried by one man or by two, and the X-shaped ribbing pressed into the sides, which gives the container its stiffness and leaves room for the contents to expand. The Allies captured the container, copied it and, after the nickname for the Germans, began to call it the jerrycan. The name caught on so thoroughly that it is used to this day.

Usage and painting tips

• the material of the parts and the method of preparing them are given in the manufacturer's instructions for the set
• wash and degrease the parts before painting, as the paint then holds considerably better
• paint some of the cans in a different shade, because units commonly gathered them from various sources
• a wash coat brings out the ribbing and the grooves between the handles
• suggest scuffed edges with a thin trace of a dark metallic shade
