The traverse gunner of the M777 howitzer in 1:35 scale - a figure of the soldier who sets the gun's direction of fire.
Responsibility details are not available.
The traverse gunner is responsible for setting the direction of the barrel. He sits or kneels at the controls of the carriage and brings the gun onto the given bearing by turning the handwheels. The name gives one piece in 1:35 scale; the maker is the Ukrainian brand Spalah, with which figures of present-day crews make up a substantial part of the range.
On towed guns the direction and the elevation of fire are worked separately, each by a different member of the crew, so that the work can go on at the same time and quickly. The traverse tends to be the more mobile part of it, because the target moves and the position is corrected. In a scene this creates a natural counterpart to the figure at the elevation controls: both figures sit at the carriage facing each other and together with the commander they form the basis of any credible firing position.
Glue it first onto a wooden block or a cork, so that you do not have to hold it in your fingers while painting. Finish the face first, then the clothing and the gear last, so that you do not accidentally catch the finished skin. Carry the small parts of the controls with tweezers, if they are separate. Apply the dust from the terrain only at the end, otherwise it would disappear under the matte varnish.
Get the paints separately; the casting comes with no surface finish.
