A single figure of an Israeli army soldier in 1:35 scale from the Black Dog model line. The number in the name sets the pose apart from the second item of the same pair, so you can buy just the one that suits a scene already under way and add the other later.
A quietly standing figure is often underrated, yet in a diorama it is needed more than a dynamic one. It is the one that gives the scene the center of gravity around which the movement of the others takes place. Put it where the scene breaks, at the corner of a building, on the edge of an embankment, at a barrier. If it stays the only figure on the base, give it a reason to be standing there: equipment laid down at its feet or an object in its hand.
Before you reach for the paint, go over the figure in hard side light and look for small transitions at the seams; after a coat of paint you will see them less easily but they will be all the more distracting. Then wash the surface, let it dry through and cover it with a thin undercoat, which evens out both the absorbency and the tone of the ground. Only on a surface prepared like that do the later coats hold as they should, and the engraved detail stays legible even after several coats.
