When you build two figures side by side, the angle of the gaze decides everything. Turn them so that their axes cross a little way above the base and the impression of a conversation arises, even though neither has an open mouth. Setting one of them back half a step adds depth to the scene. Two figures facing each other at the same distance from the edge, by contrast, look contrived and flatten the whole composition.
To keep a pair from looking like two castings of the same man, plan the differences in advance. Keep the clothing in one tone, but give one figure a lighter accessory and the other darker gloves or heavier dusting.
