About product

Gun mantlet with the PaK 39 barrel for the Jagdpanzer IV L/48, 1:35 scale

The set is not a kit of the vehicle. It replaces the gun mantlet and the barrel from the boxed kit of the early Jagdpanzer IV armed with the 7.5 cm PaK 39 gun of 48 calibers in barrel length. The turned barrel holds a circular cross section along its whole length, has a cleanly finished muzzle and has no mold seam of the kind you have to sand out on an injection-molded half barrel.

What sets this version apart: it carries the early type of muzzle brake. The manufacturer also makes a version with the double-baffle brake and a version with no muzzle brake at all, so choose according to the particular vehicle you are building.

The real subject

The Jagdpanzer IV came about as a tank destroyer on the chassis of the Panzer IV. A low casemate superstructure with sloped armor plates and the gun in the front wall took the place of a rotating turret. The early production series used the PaK 39 L/48 with a muzzle brake, which was omitted on later vehicles because of the dust stirred up after a shot. The design of the mantlet and the muzzle is therefore one of the main clues when identifying the production series in period photographs.

Usage tips

Try the opening in the front wall of the superstructure dry first and remove any excess from the plastic, not from the barrel. Degrease the metal or smoothly finished surface, spray it with a primer and only then paint, otherwise the coat will not hold. Finally, pick out the muzzle with a dark shade and lightly dust the area around the mantlet with pigment, because it is an exposed surface.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the early Jagdpanzer IV in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers bothered by the seam on a split plastic barrel
  • Those building a particular vehicle from a photographic reference
  • More experienced modelers working with parts from outside the box

The accessory is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is only a gun mantlet with barrel for an already built Jagdpanzer IV kit. The base model is not included in the package.

The muzzle brake decides. This item is the version with the early muzzle brake; the manufacturer also makes a double-baffle brake and a version with no brake.

Always try it dry. Deal with any difference against the opening in the superstructure by reworking the plastic part, and leave the barrel alone.

Degrease, prime, and only then the covering shade. Pick out the muzzle with a dark shade and the area around the mantlet with a fine pigment.
