A set of self-adhesive painting masks in 1:35 scale from the maker Quickwheel. It is neither a kit nor replacement parts but an aid for painting: the masks cover the metal part of the wheel, so that you spray the rubber tire with a sharp and even transition that can hardly be made with a brush. The set is cut for the Leopard 2 kit from the maker Rye Field Model - the shape of the masks matches the wheels from that kit, so on wheels of another origin the fit has to be checked.
The Leopard 2 is a German main battle tank introduced at the end of the 1970s and still operated by a number of European armies. It carries a 120 mm smoothbore gun and running gear on torsion bars with road wheels fitted with rubber tires. It is precisely the rubber tires of the road wheels that are conspicuous on a model: they divide the wheel into a dark outer ring and a lighter metal center, and an inaccurately sprayed boundary gives haste away at once.
First spray the wheels in the base shade of the vehicle including the tire and let the paint cure properly, not merely dry. Then place the mask on the center of the wheel, press it down right round and smooth the edge with a toothpick or a stick, so that the paint does not run under it. Spray the dark shade of the tire in several thin coats at right angles to the surface - a thick coat will create a step at the edge. Take the mask off as soon as the paint has set; if you wait long the edge peels. Finally dust the tire with pigments, so that it looks dusty and matte.
The masks are an aid for painting, not a model or replacement parts. A kit and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
