A set of climbing liana leaves etched from thin metal sheet for a scene in 1:35 scale. Lianas are rewarding in a diorama, because they create a story on their own: they grow over ruins, abandoned equipment, fences and tree trunks, and they give a scene time and atmosphere. The type designation distinguishes the individual shapes of leaf, and the manufacturer makes several in this series, so they can be combined.
A climbing plant has to follow the shape of whatever it grows over and at the same time stay airy. That calls for a material which is thin and holds its shape, that is for photo-etch. Every leaf can be turned and bent individually, so the tendril does not look like a flat strip. Metal also takes cyanoacrylate glue on metal, on plastic and on a painted surface.
Snip the leaves off the fret and sand the burr away. Prepare the support for the liana in advance, usually from thin wire or from twisted fiber that follows the shape of a wall or a structure. Give the metal a primer intended for metal first, then paint with acrylics; with jungle vegetation it pays to mix several shades of green and to lighten some of the leaves or, on the contrary, to darken them, because a uniform green looks artificial. Glue the leaves onto the tendril one by one rather than all at once, and turn them in different directions. At the end tie the whole climber together with a light glaze and dust it with a fine pigment to match the setting of the scene.
The package contains photo-etched leaves. Paints, glue and wire for the tendrils are not part of it.
