A set of figures of the crew of the Long Range Desert Group, which operated in the North African desert in the Second World War. It is the third item of the figure range that Thunder Model releases alongside its vehicles. Neither a vehicle nor weapons beyond what belongs to the figures are offered here.
The Long Range Desert Group moved deep into the desert on modified trucks and light vehicles, often for weeks on end with no support. The clothing matched that: loose shirts, scarves, sand goggles and improvised layers against the cold of the night. In a setting the crews therefore look far more civilian than ordinary units, and that is exactly what appeals to modelers – the scene gains the atmosphere of a long-range patrol at once, not of a parade.
A desert subject stands or falls on how you handle dust. Choose the base shades lighter than they would seem, because the sun bleaches the cloth. Once they are dry, go over the folds with a thin dark wash and finally dust an ocher pigment lightly from the boots upward, so that it looks settled rather than sprayed on. Paint tanned skin in warmer tones and do not forget the sharp transition where a scarf covered it. Seat the figures in action rather than in a stiff pose; a patrol on a long run never stopped for no reason.
