The set is not a kit of the howitzer. It is an accessory that gives a model what the box usually lacks or only hints at — the rounds and their stowage inside the fighting compartment and around the vehicle. With self-propelled artillery it is precisely the ammunition that on a finished model most betrays that the builder took trouble over the interior, because open rear doors or a raised hatch with nothing behind them look empty.
It comes out best on a model with an open fighting compartment, or in a diorama where a crew is at work preparing the vehicle to fire. It works well outside the vehicle too — ammunition laid out on a tarpaulin, in transport containers or by the rear entrance gives a scene scale and a story without your having to open the model itself.
The M-109 is an American self-propelled howitzer of 155 mm caliber on a tracked chassis with a rotating turret. The caliber given in the name answers to the real armament of the vehicle, so the pairing of carrier and ammunition is sound. The vehicle went through a series of modernizations and served in many armed forces, which opens a wide choice of possible treatments to modelers.
Wash the parts first in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry thoroughly, so that the paint holds. Then spray them over with primer. The metal parts of the rounds and cases are nicely set apart with a fine metallic shade, while the bodies themselves will take a matte coat with a discreet dusting. For telling them apart it is worth working with small colored bands and lettering only where you really see them on the real subject.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
