About product

M9 ACE 1:35 - a Hauler photo-etched accessory set

A photo-etched set from the Czech maker Hauler cut for one particular kit, from Takom. By itself it is not a model: it holds metal parts that replace or complete the plastic parts of a model you have built. In 1:35 scale photo-etch can render what injection-molded plastic cannot manage for technological reasons, that is, sheets, grilles, straps and brackets of a real thickness.

The real subject

The M9 ACE, by its full name the Armored Combat Earthmover, is an American armored engineer vehicle introduced with the ground forces in the 1980s. It combines the properties of a bulldozer and a scraper with an armored hull and is meant for work in a threatened area: it digs firing positions and trenches, builds earth banks, removes obstacles and shapes the terrain for an advance and for defense. The hull is worked by a single crew member, and the machine is designed to manage cross-country moves under its own power.

Building and painting tips

Before starting, sort the parts out beforehand according to the instructions and lay out the procedure, because photo-etch is fitted in the right order so that the later parts can still be reached. Brass is springy, and so the bends are made more easily after annealing: pass the sheet briefly and carefully over a flame, which softens the metal, and the bend then holds without springing. Bend on a bender or at least between two sharp edges, not between your fingers. Cut the parts off with a scalpel on a hard surface and sand the surplus of the fret tab down. Before painting, degrease the photo-etch and spray a primer meant for metal, or the paint will peel off while the model is handled. It is glued with super glue applied in a minimal amount, and with larger areas the thicker gel variant will help, as it gives time to set a part.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building modern American engineer equipment in 1:35 scale.
  • Builders who want to replace coarse plastic detail.
  • More experienced modelers with experience of working with photo-etch.
  • Competition and display-case models, where the fineness of the detail matters.

The accessory set is supplied unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No. It is a photo-etched accessory set that is fitted to a model built from the Takom kit. The kit has to be obtained separately.

It is an armored engineer vehicle. It digs firing positions and trenches, builds earth banks, clears obstacles and shapes the terrain, and does so even in a threatened area.

Anneal the sheet briefly over a flame, which softens the brass, and bend on a bender or between two sharp edges. The bend then holds its shape.
