The T-48 track with extended end connectors, nicknamed duckbills. 3D-printed workable links for Shermans in 1:35.
Responsibility details are not available.
The extended end connectors, nicknamed duckbills, were sheet-metal extensions bolted to the edge of the track. They enlarged the contact area, lowered the ground pressure and were meant to get the tank out of the mud it was drowning in. This set carries them on 3D-printed workable T48 type links in 1:35 scale.
The need arose in the autumn of 1944, when the Western Front bogged down in the waterlogged fields of the Netherlands and Lorraine. The American connectors had the shape of a wide, almost square plate, while European orders brought a narrower piece with reinforced edges. They were most often fitted on the outer side of the track. They were fragile, though: they bent, cracked and readily tore off when driving on hard ground, so period photographs often show vehicles with an incomplete set.
That very irregularity is the greatest opportunity during the build. Leaving a few connectors missing or bending them slightly looks more convincing than a perfectly even row. Assemble the links dry first and apply the glue only after you have tried the sag; the gel form of cyanoacrylate glue gives you more time to line things up. The extended connectors get dirty differently from the track tread: a lighter deposit of dust and dry mud along the edges suits them.
